Fundamentals of Lindy Hop
Ideal for our Columbus dancers familiar with our weekly and quarterly dances who want to swing out!
You have experience with East Coast Swing and/or Lindy Hop. You are familiar with rock-steps, triple steps, and 6-count moves. You might have done a swingout on the social dance floor. You are ready to become a solid 8-count and Lindy Hop dancer.
Intensive Non-Audition Lindy Hop
Requires a solid knowledge of lindy hop, including the send out from closed, swingout, and the lindy circle.
You feel you are an “intermediate” dancer. You social dance often, have taken a progressive lesson series, and are comfortable at medium tempos (up to 170 bpm). You are familiar with swingouts, tuck turns, basic Charleston, and some footwork variations. Most dancers in this track will have traveled to one or many Lindy Hop event(s).
Intensive Video Audition Lindy Hop (A & B tracks)
Video audition required. Requires a solid knowledge of lindy hop, with the expectation you travel to workshops to improve your technique and styling.
Good news: you don’t need to get up early for our auditions, and you know you’ll be seen.
Based on feedback from previous years, we now offer two video audition tracks. Both tracks are intensive: that means you will have large chunks of time with the same set of instructors to dig deep into lindy hop concepts. Come prepared for rewarding work.
You feel you are an “advanced” dancer. You dance regularly, and are comfortable at fast tempos (up to 220 bpm). You travel to challenge and improve your dancing skill set. You strive to perfect your connection with your dance partner, and devote time to understanding the nuances of Lindy Hop. You are excited by the opportunity to break down your preconceptions and build up to become a better dancer. Most dancers in this track will have traveled to Lindy Hop workshops for more than 3 years.
We encourage everyone to submit sooner so every video has time for thorough study from the audition committee.
- Video 2 – 4 minutes of your social lindy hop dancing (Jack & Jill competition videos count).
- Showcase your lindy hop fundamentals rather than fancy moves. Swing out!
- Upload to YouTube. Make sure it’s public or unlisted!
- Enter your YouTube URL in the Audition Section of the registration form.
- We will accept auditions until tracks are full.
- Final placements announced the week of the event.
Do I have to submit a video audition?
Will I be in the same track (or better) than last year?
- Each track depends on the pool of applicants and venue restrictions.
- Please do not assume you will be in the same track you were before.
60 Seconds of Fame
Weekend or dances only pass holders qualify qualify for the 60 Seconds of Fame competition.
Inspired by the Korean Authentic Jazz Weekend “Shortcase” competitions, we bring you the 60 Seconds of Fame at Rocktober. If you’ve ever wanted to do a choreographed routine, this is your opportunity!
- Routines must last between 55 – 65 seconds.
- Choreography must exhibit the spirit of swing.
- You must select and edit your music prior to the event and email it to us.
Random Partner Contest
Weekend or dances only pass holders qualify for the Random Partner competition.
Competing partnerships are randomly matched leaders and followers. Music for each dance is selected at random without the competitors’ prior knowledge.
Depending on the number of competitors, we may have one or many “heats” where the judges will watch the group paired together randomly. A subset of dancers will be selected for finals.
